If arriving by bus alight in the centre of Sedbergh near the church. Otherwise park in one of the public carparks. Pass the Dalesman pub towards Kendal and immediately turn right along the weaving its way up the hill passing the community hall. There follows just over 2 miles of road walking towards Howgill with pleasant views. Eventually turn right up a farm road to pass through Birkhaw farmyard. The farm track climbs up the hill eventually reaching the fellside. Passing through a gate bear left and then right climbing uphill and to the left-hand side of the shoulder of hill in front.
In time the path descends slightly to cross Swarth Greaves and Bram Rigg Becks and then climbs very steeply up a shoulder of hill, The views are spectacular. The path veers to the left of the top of the hill arriving at a slight depression in in the hill front. Turn left to make the final ascent to the Calf. Leaving The Calf descend slightly on the well used track and the upwards to reach the nearby summit of Calders. The path then descends steeply before rising to pass Arant Haw. If time permits, a slight deviation can be made to the summit. Otherwise continue down hill veering left into Settlebeck Gill. The path keeps to the right of the beck all the way down. At the bottom pass through a wicket gate and follow the path to Sedbergh with the mott and bailey castle remains to the left. Arriving at a farm yard join the metalled farm access road to return to Sedbergh.
Proceed along the main street and back to the bus stop just outside the Dalesman Pub / Post office. Take care not to miss the bus as it could be a week until the next one! If time permits visit various cafes or the Dalesman pub for refreshment.
