Middleton Fells The Middleton Fells provide an excellent horseshoe circuit across rolling fells with a steep drop down to Barbon Dale and Dent at one side. On the clear day the views are impressive throughout Back to Yorkshire Dales Contents Page Use Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 map Yorkshire Dales Southern & Western Areas - the Middleton Fells are included on the recent version (but not early editions) The Walk - Middleton Fells Circular - 12 miles - 5 hours- Start in the village of Barbon just off the road from Kirby Lonsdale to Sedburgh and park on road between pub and church.
Walk past church (on left) and turn left along private road. At bend in road walk straight on eventually with woods on left. Cross small field to Eskholme Farm and in next field immediately turn right to start climbing. pass through gate at top of field and onto moorland. Climb steeply to Eskholme Pike and then on grassy path to Castle Knott.
Continue along ridge to The Calf (not to be confused with another nearby hill of the same name). The path now follows the wall/fence edge for some way gently descending in a curve to Fellside farm. The follow vehicle track down to main road near pub. Turn left along road. Unfortunately the return route is along the main road (although not unpleasant) for 1 mile and then turn left along a little used lane for 2½ miles to return to Barbon
